HSM: A hit in Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines || 29 Jun 2006
SINGAPORE, June 29: The premiere of the Disney Channel original movie, High School Musical, scored big numbers in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
High School Musical aired last Sunday, June 25 and scored record results in three major Asian territories.
In Malaysia, the movie posted a 30-percent share among kids 6-14 years old in subscription TV households, scoring a 9.0 rating and making it the highest-rated movie telecast among kids 6-14 years old on any kids’ channel in Malaysia.
In Singapore, against all subscription TV and free-to-air programs, High School Musical was the number-one telecast with kids 4-14 in subscription TV homes with 32 percent share of the audience.
In the Philippines, the show ranked number one in its time slot against all other kids’ channels.
“High School Musical has established itself as a bona fide hit not only in Southeast Asia but all over the world because its story touches lives across boundaries,” said Nicky Parkinson, the Sr VP and managing director of Walt Disney Television International (Asia Pacific). “It is a hit not only with the youth but with everyone that believes in following your dreams with all your heart. We’re delighted with the reception in Asia for this Disney Channel Original Movie and we look forward to continuing to deliver programming that strikes a chord with our audiences.”
The movie's huge popularity has created a number of ancillary business opportunities for The Walt Disney Company. The first will be the release of the movie’s soundtrack on CD across the South East Asia region in July.
